Fit guide

Three numbers describe how a frame fits. Learn them once and every pair you buy afterwards - from us or anyone - is easier.

The short version

Hold a ruler flat across your face at eye level, temple to temple. Under 130 mm take the S, 130 to 140 mm the M, over 140 mm the L. That is it for most people. The rest of this page is for the edge cases.

The three numbers

Look inside the temple of any pair of glasses you own and you will usually find something like 52 □ 20 145. That is lens width, bridge width and temple length, all in millimetres. Ours are on every product page under “Measurements”.

Lens widthOne lens, at its widest, edge to edgeHow wide the whole frame is on your face. The number that picks your size.
BridgeThe gap between the two lenses, where the frame sits on your noseWhether the frame sits high or low, and whether it slides.
Temple lengthFrom the hinge to the tip of the armWhether the arm reaches behind your ear or stops short.

Face width, and which size it means

Stand in front of a mirror with a ruler held flat against your face at the level of your eyes. Read the width where the ruler meets your temples - the flat bit beside each eye, not the ears. Ten seconds, one number.

Between sizes: go down for acetate, which sits closer and grips, and up for thin steel, which relies on nose pads and can slide if the frame is narrow. If you want sunglasses that cover a lot of face, go up regardless - that is what the oversized shelf is for.

Bridge: high, low and in between

Most of our acetate frames have a keyhole or saddle bridge that rests along the sides of the nose; the steel frames have adjustable silicone pads. Which suits you depends on where your nose starts.

Temple length

Our standard temple is 140–145 mm, which reaches behind the ear on most heads. The sport wrap uses 125 mm straight temples on purpose, so they clear a helmet strap and grip the side of the head rather than hooking behind the ear. If a frame pinches behind the ears or slides forward when you look down, the temple angle is wrong, not the frame: an optician adjusts it in a minute, free, and so do we if you post it.

Acetate loosens, steel bends

Two things change a fit after you buy. Acetate softens above about 60 °C - a parked car in July - and the temples open out, so the frame sits lower. Warm the temples gently with a hairdryer and press them in, or have an optician do it. Thin steel goes out of true if it is sat on; it bends back. Neither is covered by the guarantee because neither is a defect, but we will straighten and re-set any frame you post to us, at no charge, for as long as you own it.
